One of the most remarkable aspects of the Ludwell family is the extent of their interconnections with so many great early Americans. This is shown very clearly in a letter of June 3, 1789 from Lucy Ludwell Paradise (daughter of Philip Ludwell III and herself an Orthodox Christian) to Abigail Adams. The letter mentions the Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Jay, first chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Some of Lucy’s expressions also point to her Orthodox Faith. It is also worthy of note that the Peter Kemble mentioned may also have been an Orthodox Christian, having been born in Smyrna/Izmir to an English father and a Phanariot Greek mother. The letter can be read in full at the Massachusetts Historical Society’s web site.
