England in 1732: Orthodox Patriarchal Delegation Seeks Funds to Redeem Christian Slaves

This extract from the Dublin Evening Post of November 18, 1732 – nine months after George Washington’s birth in Virginia – presents a very different picture of the connections between Anglo-Saxon society and the Orthodox East during the lifetime of Philip Ludwell III. A delegation sent by the Orthodox Patriarchs of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem is visiting England to raise money for the redemption of Christian slaves.
