Colonel Ludwell’s Letter to George Washington in 1755
In the 1750s, Colonel Philip Ludwell III was appointed as a member of the Royal Governor’s Council in Virginia. This article in Road to Emmaus magazine features Col. Ludwell’s letter of August 8, 1755, in which he refers to George Washington’s pending commission in the Virginia Regiment. His commission as a Colonel in the Virginia Regiment – in effect the first standing army in British America – was issued five days later, on August 14, 1755.
